Putting all humor aside for the moment, here is a toilet that has its place in history, as documented by a brilliant young writer. In Nazi-occupied Amsterdam, Anne Frank, her father, mother, sister, and several other Jews hiding from the Nazis, lived in a small dwelling located in the floors above a spice company's offices. This dwelling became known as the Secret Annexe. The toilet you see here is the toilet that was shared by the residents of the Secret Annexe. There were several burglaries in the offices below during their two-year stay there, and when they happened, the people living upstairs had to keep silent, or run the risk of being caught. This meant, among other things, that no one was allowed to flush the toilet, sometimes for hours. After one such break-in, a thirteen year-old Anne Frank made the following entry in her world-renowned diary: "We agreed not to run any water or flush the toilet; but since everyone's stomach was churning from all the tension, you can imagine the stench after we'd each had a turn in the lavatory." Simply titled Amsterdam Toilet,
this photo was taken by Luuc Stafleu in 1981. Color so rich you can practically smell it!

This Romanian toilet was generously donated by Vlad Nanca, a photographer currently working on a photo essay about Romanian toilets. Vlad writes, "Public Toilets in Romania are most of the times simply filthy! Of course there are cleaner toilets and some of the most popular public toilets are the McDonalds, KFC, etc. toilets. People are actually going to their toilets and happily enjoy the globalization!" |

Another photo from Amsterdam, this is
Plenty of Paper
by Dik van Veldhuizen. This roll puts Scott Tissue's "1000 sheets per roll" to shame. |
|
Technically, this doesn't belong in The Toilet Museum because there is no toilet in the picture. However, I felt that excluding it would be a bit anal. And besides, my sister sent it to me from Antwerp, Belgium. Photo by Jos Lambregs, 1993. |

This is Ed's friend, Robert, making himself comfortable in the toilet of Havana, a gay night club in Amsterdam. Hey sailor, sending another ship out to sea?! |
|
Toilets! Get your toilets here! Ed took this picture of a toilet in the display window of a Dutch hardware store. |

An original contribution to the museum, this photo was taken by Greg Anderson in Pavia, Italy. It makes you want to grab a mop, doesn't it? Phew!
|
 |
Another Greg Anderson original, this one was taken in Japan. I'll bet not too much reading gets done in this bathroom. What a pity. |
 |
WAIT! I can explain! Greg sent me this postcard from Rome. On the back, he wrote, "It's one big toilette, ne c'est pas?" It's a joke! (I sure hope this doesn't start an international incident.)
The Toilet Museum ama Italia!
