From the 1988 Touchstone Pictures and Amblin Entertainment production of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, this cel was auctioned off along with five other cels from the same sequence at Sotheby's in 1989. It was estimated that the six cels would go for between $4000 and $5000. It's a shame that I didn't learn about the auction until after it took place, or The Toilet Museum would have definitely been the highest bidder. (yeah, right)

Ladies and gentlemen and children of all ages, please direct your attention to the wire suspended over the lavender toilet. Watch, as Armon, the fearless goldfish from Latvia, transverses the mouth of the flushing abyss while his gills flap in vain for oxygen.

The Euro-Toilet-Monkey Mystery
Revealed!

My old roommate, Ed, picked this ceramic coaster up in Greece. He said there were images of monkeys on toilets all over Greece at the time, but he didn't know what they meant. I asked a couple of people from Greece about it, and they didn't know what he was talking about. I was determined to understand the meaning of the monkey on the toilet.

A few years later, while visiting Amsterdam, Ed bought this picture of a monkey on a chamber pot. It was published by the Lion Press in the United Kingdom. It appeared that the epidemic had spread to Northern Europe. My curiosity grew, and I asked visitors to The Toilet Museum to explain what this Euro-toilet-monkey thing was about.

This toilet-using "minkey," also from Amsterdam, was the first of the series to be displayed in The Toilet Museum. In May of 2000, Meir Warcel, the artist who created this, wrote to clear up the Euro-Toilet-Monkey mystery. Although his explanation was from a Dutch point of view, it clearly explains the presence of monkey-toilet pictures in other parts of Europe. Mr. Warcel wrote, "In Amsterdam, some guys think it's funny to urinate in the streets. This picture shows that even a monkey knows how to urinate in a toilet. GET IT NOW!" Got it. Good. Thanks.

In defense of Taco Bell, let me just say that spicy food stimulates the production of digestive juices, and helps to burn body fat. So what if you have to spend a little more time on the toilet? Look at it as a good opportunity to catch up on your reading.
