Dark days as art goes down the panKINGSTON, England (Sep 13 2004)
Normally when the light goes out in the toilet you know there's something wrong. But that's exactly what has been happening deliberately in the latest exhibition at Kingston's Toilet Gallery. The gallery, sponsored by Domestos, is currently exhibiting Blackout, three artists' responses to the complementary opposites of darkness and light. Zoe Dorelli, Hanna ten Doornkaat and Marianne Walker have blacked out all natural light at the gallery as a metaphor for the subconscious, as well as to give viewers a mental, physical and aesthetic experience. The artworks are in total darkness creating a cinema-like ambience to encourage a feeling of escapism. Blackout runs until September 24 at The Toilet Gallery, 143-159 Clarence Street, Kingston, opposite Oceana nightclub. It is open Wednesdays to Fridays from 1pm to 6pm, Saturdays, 10am to 6pm and Sundays from noon to 5pm. For more details call 07881 832 291. © copywrite 09/13/2004 This is Local London |
